Training's done. Did anyone actually absorb it?

Most HR and L&D teams know the feeling. You run an onboarding session, a compliance refresher, or a process update — and afterward you have no real way to tell who understood the material and who just waited for it to end.

Otter Test closes that gap. It's an internal training and assessment tool designed to check what your people retained without turning it into an ordeal. The tests aren't here to weed anyone out. If someone doesn't pass, they retake it as many times as they like, and after each miss the system points them to exactly the topics they were weak on — the goal is to help them improve, not to filter them.

It fits HR and L&D best, but any team that needs to check knowledge can use it — workplace safety, internal procedures, product knowledge, or domain expertise.

From training docs to certificate

The flow follows four steps that will feel familiar to anyone who's run training before:

• Build a question bank. Upload your training documents (PDF, Markdown, or plain text) and the AI drafts questions for you to review and edit. You get single-answer, multiple-answer, true/false, and fill-in question types. You keep full control to rewrite, add, or remove anything — the question bank is yours.
• Open a test session. Set the duration, number of questions, pass mark, and the window when people can take it. Each person gets a shuffled paper — question and option order differ — to make copying harder.
• Target it by role. Assign the session to a role group; each person sees only the tests meant for them.
• Take it, get results and a certificate. It's graded automatically with instant results. Pass and you earn a certificate — a small but real incentive to finish the training. Fail, and you retake it with a study plan pointing at exactly what to review.

Writing questions by hand is usually the most tedious part, and it's exactly where the AI saves you the most time.

Your AI, local or cloud

Otter Test doesn't lock you into any AI provider, and the AI is optional — turn it off and every testing function still works. When it's on, you declare the provider, endpoint, and model you want to use:

• Run a local model (a self-hosted Gemma, for instance) when you want training documents and questions to stay inside your own systems.
• Point to a cloud model when you need a larger context window to work through long documents.

To be straight with you so you can choose well: if you use a cloud model, your training documents are sent to that provider. For anything sensitive, run a local model and the data never leaves the building.

AI-drafted questions don't go straight into a test: they land in a review queue for an admin to check and edit before they're accepted. And while employees are taking a test, the system makes no AI calls — the questions and phrasings are prepared ahead of time, so it stays fast and private.

Versioned question banks, so live sessions never drift

Each time you finalize a bank, it's frozen into a fixed version and running sessions read from that snapshot — editing questions later can never corrupt a session already in progress. The system also learns from your own corrections: a correct-but-differently-worded answer can be added to the official answer list, so next time it matches instantly without needing the AI.

Open source, customizable for the enterprise

The core of Otter Test is open source under the MIT license: you self-host it and use it free internally — no license fees, no per-seat charges. When you need more, there's an enterprise plan:

• LMS / HRMS integration. Connect Otter Test to your existing training (LMS) or HR (HRMS) system — single sign-on, staff sync, and assessment results pushed back to the right employee records.
• Custom development. Add features specific to your process, billed by the day.
• Installation help from 3,000,000đ when you already have the infrastructure in place.
